Okay, so I know I’m a little late on the BEAKEY craze but these magic little eggs deserve a review. The first time I used one I hated it and I didn’t understand all the hype it was receiving. It took me a good six months to realize that I was using it completely wrong - go figure. I’m here now to pass on a little knowledge so people don’t make the same mistake I did in underestimating this amazing little tool.
Let’s talk about the anatomy of the sponge first. It’s very soft The foam’s characteristic open cell structure allows the sponge to “fill” with water, effectively doubling the sponge’s size when wet and making it even softer. This also allows product to sit on top of the sponge as opposed to it being absorbed into the sponge, saving you product and money on each application. The sponge itself has no hard edges and looks like an egg in shape. No hard edges and a pore mimicking texture means a flawless application - every time.
Before using a BEAKEY to apply makeup, it’s important to get it wet. My mistake was using it dry the first time - it didn’t go well for me. I usually spray it with run it under the tap for a minute and then squeeze as much of the excess water out as you can - you want the sponge to be damp, not wet. According to Beakey, you use the sponge to pick up the product and then use a bouncing motion to apply the product. This mimics what we in the makeup world call “stippling” which is a technique used to apply makeup void of visible edges, making the finished product look super natural. Personally I find it works just as well if you apply cream makeup with a brush and then use the Beauty Blender in the same motion to blend it out. As for powder, the sponges picks it up wonderfully and using a nice “press and roll” motion will make it really stay all day. I used one for a photoshoot the other day and I swear I will never go back - it quickened my process and produced a flawless finish!
Now as for care and maintenance, I’ll just go ahead and be blunt. Anything that holds moisture is a breeding ground for mold and bacteria, antibacterial foam or not. Some people say they wash theirs once per week, but I’m definitely an advocate for washing your sponges after every use (especially if you have acne-prone skin). It doesn’t take long at all either so you really have no excuse! but I usually just use a little shampoo or hand soap, wash it under running water until the water runs clear and lay it out to air dry. This will also keep your BB from looking super gross (because mark my words, if you don’t wash it, it will look so gross you literally won’t be able to even). It’s also important to note that the recommended time to replace your sponges is every 90 days. You could probably go a little longer but I wouldn’t go much longer than that due to bacteria build up and possible sponge degradation.
All in all I’d say that BEAKEY are not only worth the money but a necessity for your kit and personal use. They’re latex-free, have an amazing shape and texture, and produce a picture perfect finish every time. Check out beakey.net if you’re interested in purchasing one, they have lots of options!
